With the coronavirus currently postponing Town’s fixture list, we’ve decided to introduce you to some of our First Team and Academy Staff - today we look at Academy Coach, George Danaher!
George was initially a scholarship striker for Town, but was one of the unfortunate few to not receive a professional contract at the conclusion of his scholarship. However, Academy Manager Leigh Bromby saw something in the 19-year-old and offered him the chance to develop the next generation of Young Terriers.
George started a Coaching Role at Town’s Academy at the start of the current season, linking up with Under-17 Coach Jon Worthington to help integrate and develop the first-year scholars. His role sees him provide players with individualised progression programmes and put on sessions to improve specific parts of a given players game.
George’s role sees him work with staff across all aspects of the Academy.
“I work closely with the rest of the Academy staff, the coaching staff really helped me over the summer to try and prepare me for the start of this season.
“I’m closest to Jon Worthington as I help him with his Under-17s group, and I also work closely with Leigh Bromby on trying to achieve the Club’s vision.”
Whilst the experience of previously being a player in the system has its benefits, George admits it can also prove to be difficult.
“The biggest challenge I’ve faced is the fact that I’m only 19, and I’m coaching players that are a similar age to me.
“Although it can be uncomfortable for me at times, I know it is really developing me as a Coach.”
George was also quick to say that there are many aspects of his job that he enjoys.
“I love watching the Academy players improve.
“I enjoy watching individuals go and put the things they have worked on with me in training into their games.
“It’s really satisfying knowing that the work me and Worthy are doing on the training pitch is coming across on the pitch.”
If the thought of coaching is one that interests you, George has some words of advice!
“My advice to anyone, particularly young people, wanting to get into coaching is to understand that when you start off it’s very unnatural and uncomfortable, but over time it will create real personal development and progression.
“I have thoroughly loved my time working at Huddersfield Town so far and look forward to the future!”
