Young Terriers narrowly beaten in second pre-season friendly

- Young Terriers beaten 2-1 at Sandy Lane

- Worthy pleased with the performance

A young Huddersfield Town Academy side continued their preparations for the new season with a tough test against a physical Worksop Town at Sandy Lane on Friday evening.

Town opened the scoring after 11 minutes, when Charles Ondo picked up the ball on the halfway line and drove forward before slipping in Kian Harratt, who fired his effort into the roof of the net to open the scoring.

Worksop were awarded a penalty just a few minutes later, but this was well saved by Max Dearnley to keep the Young Terriers ahead.

Two minutes later, Worksop were awarded another penalty, which this time was struck hard down the middle and into the back of the net.

Town’s youngsters responded well to the equaliser, seeing Harratt have two more attempts at giving them the lead. His first couldn’t quite beat the ‘keeper, whilst his second was flagged for offside.

Worksop came out after the break the stronger of the two sides, doubling their lead in the 52nd minute.

The game settled down after the hosts’ second, with both sides trying to get hold of the ball.

The final chance of the game fell to Town, when Ondo sent the ball goalbound, but saw it hit the post.

Despite their best attempts, the Young Terriers were unable to find an equaliser, and so it was the hosts who took the pre-season victory.

Academy Coach Jon Worthington was pleased with the Young Terriers’ performance against a physical opposition.

“I thought it was a competitive game.

“Worksop gave us different challenges to try and overcome, especially out of possession”

“I felt that they dealt with Worksop’s physicality really well.

“There were a lot of 17-year-olds on the pitch, and to play up against a team who get the ball forward and play like that, I thought the lads stood up to them really well.

“Whenever you come to places like this, it’s great, it’s a different experience.”

“It was a different challenge for the lads, which is what it is all about, and they will take lots from the game.”
