Huddersfield Town Manager Danny Cowley expressed his delight with his side’s performance following the 3-0 win at Birmingham City.
Town registered a first win since the Sky Bet Championship’s return courtesy of goals from Karlan Grant, Fraizer Campbell and Elias Kachunga.
Danny Cowley praised his side’s showing in the West Midlands and has challenged the Terriers to produce more of the same in the coming weeks.
Speaking to the media, Danny gave his thoughts on Town’s performance
“It was an important win and a good performance to boot which was really pleasing,” he said.
“I was really pleased with the clean sheet. I’m proud of the two centre-halves – they were critical of themselves off the back of Sunday’s performance and they showed real fortitude tonight against two good centre-forwards.
“I was also pleased off the back of missing the second penalty. In that moment you can easily feel sorry for yourself, but we didn’t, we stayed really resilient, kept fighting, stayed in the moment, and were able to score that important second goal.”
Another thing that pleased Danny on the night was the availability of his two centre-forwards Frazier Campbell and Steve Mounié for the first time since the restart.
Town’s Manager believes having his ‘number nines’ back was important to winning the game.
“Having Frazier back was huge, we felt that as a group. I thought he was exceptional and fully deserving of his goal. It was great to have Steve Mounié back as well.
“Tonight, we were able to get a much better balance. It was important to us and allowed us to get into the game.”
The three points have since lifted Town out of the Sky Bet Championship relegation zone and up into 19th in the table.
With six games to go in the season, Danny is hoping for more of the same from his side in the coming weeks.
“It was a good performance, but it doesn’t make you a good team. To be a good team, you have to do it consistently and that is the challenge now.
“We’re certainly not going to over-celebrate tonight. We’re pleased to perform well, we’ve taken a lot of criticism as a group and most of it has been fair.
“When you’re in a difficult moment, you learn a lot about yourselves. It’s easy to stand tall when things are going well, it’s much more difficult to do that in adversity and we did that tonight.”
Next up for Town is a return to the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday (4 July 2020), with Preston North End the visitors to West Yorkshire.
Town’s Manager insists the Terriers recovery from the 90 minutes at St Andrew’s will be important going into the weekend’s encounter.
“It was a physical game tonight and we expended a lot of effort and a lot of energy so our recovery will be as important as our preparation going into Saturday.
“We’ve now got six very important matches, it’s very tight at the bottom of the league and everyone at the bottom is winning which often happens in leagues when you get to this time in the season.
“We’re not getting ahead of ourselves. We know that there is a lot of hard work still to be done. Now, we have to turn our focus really quickly to Preston.”
