TOWN WOMEN WELCOME AFC FLYDE IN THE FAWNL

17 November 2021

Women’s team to face Fylde under the lights

- Huddersfield Town Women looking to bounce back in league
- New Manager Glen Preston in charge
- Kick-off at Stafflex Arena at 7.45pm

Huddersfield Town Women welcome fellow top four side AFC Fylde to the Stafflex Arena on Wednesday 17 November as they look to close the gap to their opponents in second.

Having previously returned to winning ways in the FAWNL Cup and following their 20-0 victory in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup, Town will be looking to get a win in the league to continue their push up the division.

However, standing in their way is an AFC Fylde side that have won their last three games. The Lancashire side have beaten Middlesbrough, Sheffield, and Brighouse Town in their previous games, scoring 12 in the process and landing them in second place in the league.

When the two sides met last season, they played out an enthralling 3-3 draw in the league’s opening game. Both sides were also rivalling for promotion, frequently interchanging the top spot before the season was curtailed.

Wednesday’s game will also see an old face return to the Huddersfield dugout, as Glen Preston takes charge of the team for the first time, having replaced previous Manager Steve Appleton. It’ll be Preston’s first game for the Club since resigning in December 2015.

Preston admits that he can’t wait to be back, but knows his next opponents will be a tough test.

“It’s a great feeling for me and a big honour to be back here.

“The task of managing a great club like Huddersfield Town is big responsibility and one that I’m going to throw everything into.

“In terms of today’s opponents, every game is a big challenge at this level because the quality is just getting better and better.

“The challenge of Fylde is about as big as they come, they are a brilliant side with a great management team who have gone from strength to strength in recent years.

“However, I expect our players to be as motivated for this game as any that they have played in recent times.”

PLAYERS TO WATCH

AFC Fylde’s Faye Mccoy is their top goal scorer this season with eight goals in nine matches, despite only scoring once in her last three games. Fylde also boast the league’s top three assisters with Jess Holbrook providing four and Emily Hollinshead and Laura Merrin both setting up three.

Meanwhile for Huddersfield, Lucy Sowerby has been in goalscoring form recently, hitting the back of the net five times against Sir Tom Finney FC on Sunday 14 November 2021.
