Huddersfield Town Women beat Sheffield FC 3-0 at the Stafflex Arena on Sunday 6 December in the Second Round of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup after being rescheduled following Storm Arwen.
The first-half was fairly steady for both Town and Sheffield, and just under 10 minutes in, Lucy Sowerby had a chance that went just over the crossbar. Then, minutes later, Brittany Sanderson had two attempts at goal, with the first after a lovely cut back from Kate Mallin, but her headed chance went straight into the hands of Abi Megeary.
Chances were falling for Town before the break, with both Beth Stanfield and Laura Elford seeing their efforts fly over the crossbar and be well saved before the whistle blew for half-time.
The Terriers found a breakthrough in the second-half when Paige Crossman scored the opener. A big call was required from the referee after the ball hit the crossbar, appearing to cross the line before bouncing back into the box - but moments later he pointed to the centre circle to confirm the wing-back had given Town the lead.
Just over 10 minutes later, Town’s lead was doubled after an unlucky deflection and own-goal saw the ball fly into the back of the net. Then, in added time, Sanderson finally got her goal.
Manager Glen Preston spoke at full-time:
“The mission was to get through to the next round and we have done it, and we have done it comfortably. Could we have won by a bigger margin? Absolutely! But we were patient and got the goals, and we have been professional.
“Loughborough will be a different game. Today was an attack vs defence for 90 minutes with 10 players in the penalty area, it was tough to break them down.
“Loughborough are a side that try and play a lot of football, so they will be different types of games, we just have to do our preparation and be as professional as we ever would, and if we play with our maximum capabilities and intensity we will give everybody a game in this league.”
