Huddersfield Town Head Coach Carlos Corberán is delighted his side has progressed in the Carabao Cup at the expense of Sheffield Wednesday.

After a 0-0 draw over 90 minutes in which Town had the clearer chances, his side stayed ice cool to dispatch all four penalties – with goalkeeper Lee Nicholls saving two – to be in the draw for the second round.

“For us, it was very important to keep going in the competition and to the next round of the Carabao Cup,” Carlos told HTTV.

REPORT: SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY 0-0 TOWN (2-4 ON PENS)

1 August 2021

“It was important to come back to the real football level and the real atmosphere of football; that will allow us to continue growing and to be ready for the next league game. We were focused on today’s game.”

Although Town didn’t beat home goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell in normal time, Corberán was encouraged by the chances his side created.

“It is very difficult to score goals if you’re creating chances, and you will have more options to score if you create more. In some moments of the game we did, but it is also true that wasn’t in all moments.

“We had some clear chances in the first half when we recovered the ball in the offensive half, and then we had some very good ones in the final 15 minutes of the game.”

Carlos was also happy with the depth the Club’s summer recruitment has added to the squad and hailed the ability to introduce Sorba Thomas, Jordan Rhodes and Danel Sinani during the second half.

“It’s very necessary, to win any type of game, to have options from the bench. In some moments the legs will be fatigued, and you need to have players to make the impact we need on the pitch, in the fighting and competitive level that the team was showing.”
