Coming out on top against Premier League opposition away from home, Town put in an inspired second half performance that saw them come from behind to book a place in the Fourth Round of the Emirates FA Cup.
Having fallen behind during a largely even first half in what turned out to be Burnley’s only real chance of note throughout the entire game, Jay Rodriguez latched on to a long looped ball in to the box finding space between Town’s last line of defence and Ryan Schofield in goal to nod the hosts in to a lead.
Town almost drew level right at the end of the first half thanks to a Jon Russell headed effort from an excellent Danel Sinani free-kick, but the debutant could only watch on as the ball rebounded back in to play off the upright.
In a one-sided second half, the Terriers dominated possession and made all of the chances, with the home side dropping deep and surrendering the initiative of the contest.
Sparked by the second half substitutions that saw Duane Holmes, Danny Ward, Sorba Thomas and Lewis O’Brien introduced, Town really turned the screw and eventually drew level through Josh Koroma tapping in an excellent driven Sorba Thomas cross on the far post after clever work from Duane Holmes.
With time running out in the second half, Duane Holmes almost put Town ahead with a headed effort from inside the area after a blocked Koroma shot came back out toward him, but England international Nick Pope did just enough to turn that around the post for a corner.
Swung in with pace by Sorba Thomas, the Welshman made it 11 assists in all competitions thanks to Matty Pearson getting on the end of the delivery and flicking Town in a richly deserved late lead off his head.
Celebrating with a sold out away end at Turf Moor on the full-time whistle, Town have the Fourth Round draw to look forward to on Sunday 9 January 2022, with the Terriers taking ball number nine.
